The Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral is located on the Ile de la Cité. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Its construction began in 1163 and extends over two hundred years until the middle of the fourteenth century. In the course of time it has undergone several modifications, the most visible being its spire erected in the nineteenth century under the direction of the architect Viollet-le-Duc.
The most visited monument in France and Europe, the Notre-Dame cathedral has inspired many artists, the most famous is the eponymous novel by Victor Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame).
Rescued from the Revolution, the cathedral had never suffered major destruction until it caught fire on April 15, 2019. This disaster ravaged the roof, several vaults and cause the collapse of the spire.
Miraculously and thanks to the intervention of the firemen, the structure of the cathedral has been preserved and many architectural and artistic elements have been saved.
